Mobile Missile Launchers Building instructions
The first version used automotive car carriers and were controlled by an RC radio, it glitched a lot. They are visible operating on my HO train Hobby YouTube channel. I did find that antennae wire that was about to break and soldered it. This version is also on YouTube and the source code is at Sourceforge.
- Delphi Program code running on a PC : Commands are sent out on-over a USB XBee. The commands are received by a XBee in the command car and relayed to an Arduino which drives the servos. The command car operates two (2) launcher cars; 1 attached at either end. The image on the right is the 2014 version that allows changing the values while the program is running. As of 2016 the 2014 version will be Devolved back to before and the code written to Attach and Detach servos as they are used. Attaching and Detaching solves all the glitching problems that were attempted to be solved by sending different values. There are currently 3 Battalions of missiles; although one of the Battalions is composed of Missiles, Container, and truck trailer launchers as Batteries A,B,and C, and the other has Charlie battery as boxed missiles on flat cars. Thus there are actually 6 Batteries of 6 missiles each.
The PC program is set to have 3 Sets of Command-launch cars and 1 Set of Command-BABES cars per Battery (BABES : Bionic Artillery Beamed Energy System) (They used to be radars and then the idea of a defensive weapon for the missiles was implemented ... FYI: there might still be references to them as radar units remaining...). There are three Batteries (A,B,C) in the Battalion. Six (6) launch tubes per Battery totals eighteen (18) tubes in the First (Heavy Metal Missile) Battalion of the 7th Artillery Regiment (GGGirls), 5th Chaos Brigade (Castle Crashers), 9th Armored Division (Metal Fire), 3rd Armored Corps (ThrAC Thunderbolt Corpse), 21st Army (First, Furthest, Forever) Uteumque Ubique : Anywhere at Any Time.
Assigned to each battery of the 1/7 BN is a battery of BABES (2) from the 9th (Disruptor) of the 11th Artillery Battalion (Kilowatt), 6th Synergy Brigade (Silent Sight), 9th Armored Division (Metal Fire), 3rd Armored Corps (ThrAC Thunderbolt Corpse), 21st Army (First, Furthest, Forever) Uteumque Ubique : Anywhere at Any Time..
The launchers and BABES could be set up as 1 squad operates 1 set therefore 1 platoon operates 6 and 1 Company operates 18... or even 1 squad operates 6, a platoon 18 and a company operates 54 (not as much variety in the 'nose art' that way tho).
First (Heavy Metal Missile) of the 7th Artillery Regiment (GGGirls) : the GGGirls
[Insignia goes here ... as soon as i make something that is not clearly the Iron-Maiden Eddie_Mummy World Slavery Tour Flag composited on the Heavy Metal movie poster] (to be printed and glued onto the lower third of the launchers as the Battalion Insignia, "Pin-up Nose Art" per each tube IAW its namesake also enlivens the scenery, and the Rockettes on the boxcars adds that modern touch {the Weapon operators paint their portraits on their tubes to identify them as 'theirs' ... the blonde BN Commander has her picture on all the Heavy Metal tubes})

The comport communications component is used to communicate between the PC and the XBee.
The program can load a file of different names to replace the default at startup so you can have fun making up names for your units.
[Image of materials laid out: placed -outside- of command car with the launchers raised in their cars. Two BABES are on the left with a rotating servo mounted and the lifting servo just laying there. The XBee Adapter to the right is a KIT - this one has been assembled, all other boards are pre-assembled. The USB XBee sitting in the middle at end of red usb cable. Batteries are absent, oops. Above that is the FTDI board and 2 Arduinos in pink plastic. The other XBee and Adafruit adapter board are to the right in and on the blue car. Many other missile and cars are in the background. Turns out you do not need the Adafruit adapter board as the 3.3V arduino can power it and the signals are at 3.3V.]
- Materials: These are made as Sets of launchers. A Control car houses a 4.8V NiMH, an Arduino [Arduino Pro Mini 328 - 3.3V/8MHz No need for 2 batteries: Servos and Arduino run from the 4.8 Volt and the XBee runs from the Arduino], a XBee radio, ESTES rocket Launcher servo (1 servo launches either rocket), sundry connecting wires (Adafruit has a great selection), and on/off switches (remove the steel plate weight from the car, as the control equipment weight adds up).
Each of two launchers per set requires two micro servos, 2 small plastic (DuBro airplane) hinges for the roof, a 2" strap hinge for the launcher - aluminum or cardboard tube (MAX: 1" OD, 10.25" long, (old lawn chair tubing)), (The cardboard tube from 'Glad Press n Seal" makes a 'slider' to simulate hydraulics-raising-lowering the launch tube. The plastic end pieces are used in the BABES assemblies) (plastic bendable straws are used to simulate the hydraulic tubes) and 4 rods (2 unbent paperclips & 2 coat hangers Or some 2-56 rods) to connect the servos to their link arms. Foam servo tape would be nice to have too (Scotch Extreme mount tape works great and Super 33+ electical tape for covering exposed wires). BABES require a servo to rotate-swivel, so that is 2 more: 3 per car.
I use GOOP -a contact adhesive- to glue the tube to the hinge and the hinge to the plate. Apply grease to the hinge so the glue does not keep it from hingeing. Also used to glue the roof hinges to the roof and car body. Glued the servos too till i got some servo tape. Used to glue the straw onto the metal plate... Glued the BABES together... uhm where else...
- Command Car:
- 4.8V 2/3A NiMH : Use the 3.3V Arduino and 4.8 V can power the Arduino, XBee and the Servos .. using THE SAME GROUND
- Arduino: Arduino Pro Mini 328 - 3.3V/8MHz
- XBee radio: XBee 1mW Wire Antenna - Series 1
- 'Adafruit' XBee Adapter kit - v1.1 NOTE: using a 3.3V Arduino Pro Mini 328 there is NO NEED for adapter to the XBEE as the voltage and signals are Already at correct voltage. One adaptor could be used to configure all the XBees .. tho the XBee Explorer USB could be used for this and it is Required to have. Removing XBees is tortuous and possibly damaging to theXBee : take care. Actually the XBees do not have to be configured - for this they work "right out of the box".
- Command Car Launching servo: Hitec HS-55 Economy Feather Servo (Honestly, I have not installed mine yet and the actual use in launching an Estes rocket from the tube would be Extremely limited. It is already getting crowded in that car. I have launched bottle rockets out of one - just sitting there - drop it in and video it shooting up and out.)
- Launcher Servos: 2 each for a Launcher set (2 cars) [3 sets per Battery]
- Roof: Hitec HS-50 Super Feather Servo [Length: 20.9mm (.82"), Width: 11.4mm (.44"), Height: 22mm (.87")(to top of case) (Discontinued - use a roof servo)
- Roof Servos (and Container servos) are small, delicate and most burn up at >4.8 Volt; LxHxH Length is critical for the roof, Height is critical for Containers

- Launcher: Hitec HS-55 Economy Feather Servo (They have the LONG arms and work great, The other half of the arm is glued to the roof servo to extend it.)
- BABES cars require 1 Roof servo, 1 Lift (HS-55) and 1 (HS-55) {standing on its side the turning point is at the center of the BABE} ((HS-55) OR a Continuous rotation servo [NOT a Parallax-Futaba 148 large servo - a medium CR servo aka Sparkfun Medium Full Rotation] (SpringRC SM-S3317SR 31.3x16.3x28.5mm. Continuous servos rotate a BABE that has less diameter, a rotate servo is used with BABES that are Wide and have to go in sideways - this makes them Tall laying down and the central rotation position is different - higher than a BABE made to continually rotate) ... Yeah get the Continuous rotation servo it is much more interesting than the ones that barely rotate back and forth and the BABES that go in sideways actually do Not go in correctly so they are all trash for RR use.
- Computer Command and Control
- XBee 1mW Wire Antenna - Series 1 (I got a XBee Pro 60mW Wire Antenna - Series 1, and have since realized that it is a 2-way message: the computer needs to KNOW that the Command car has received the command and has accomplished the task - so if the Receiver is not powerful enough to transmit back its information it does not matter that the computer can transmit its commands a great distance.)
- Sparkfun or Adafruit XBee USB Adapter
- Totals for the BN :
- 18 launchers, 6 BABES, and 12 Command cars: 36 cars : 48 hinges (command car roof just lift off)
- 12ea: 4.8V NiMH batteries, Arduino, XBee radio, XBee Breakout board (or just a mount to solder wires to - all the ones need are on 1 side - an XBee adapter is Not needed), sets of switches, wires
- Roof 24ea: 'roof servo', Raise 24ea: Hitec HS-55, Rotate 6 ea: Hitec HS-55 or Continuous Rotation, Command Launch 9ea: Hitec HS-55
- 1ea: XBee, XBee Explorer USB, USB cable (Optional tho Very useful: Arduino Uno, USB cable, [Adafruit] XBee Adapter, FTDI 6 wire cable : these are used to get everything set and working before placing inside the train cars)
- sample of prices as of 2012
- [Tower hobbies] Hitec HS-50 $16@ (discontinued); [Hobby Lobby eRC 5 Gram Precision Micro Servo <$10@ are small enough see roof servo list] Be advised that the sizes of servos do NOT include the rotating arm, so if space is limited allow for another 1/8" at least... that and the metal push rod.
- [Tower hobbies, hobbylinc, etc...] Hitec HS-55 $10@
- [Adafruit] XBee Adapter: $10, XB radio: $23,
- [Sparkfun] Arduino Pro Mini 328 - 3.3V $19, FTDI Cable 5V/3.3V $18,

- [Sparkfun] XBee radio: $23, XBee Explorer USB $25
Start with a Walthers 86' 8 door auto parts boxcar. 4 door boxcars are used as the command cars - simply because i bought them before i realized the roof-non closure would be more apparent. (The roof sits above the top of the roof edge - does not look 'too' bad - except where the door hinges are not there at the ends of the car; hmmm for 4 door cars a strip of styrene could be glued on) Command cars only require the roof bracket edge be cut off so the roof is easier to remove and yet can be held securely. On the 8 door cars, only the ends show a gap when they are hinged. so... buy only 8 door cars. "8 door cars were used excluively by GM Chevrolet plants" 86 foot Auto Parts Boxcar Doors : CShaveRR ...times have changed...
Overview: I have the hinge on the same side as the brake wheel. Cut the inside roof brackets off so the roof can raise and the missile will not hit anything. Cut a 1/8 deep slot the width of a hinge out of the top edge wall of the car (just outside of the doors). Cut another for the other hinge. Cut out/off the internal roof flanges where the hinges and the servo connection is glued. Glue hinges to the inside of the roof, and the outside of the car. Remove the metal weight. Glue a servo into the car and link to the roof. I make the launchers as 'pairs' so the tubes raise pointing towards each other. The servo that raises the roof is where the wires go out and having them closest to the command car makes for shorter servo wire lengths. Yeah and the missile could not fully raise with the wires mangled underneath it.
Launchers are made by glueing a tube onto a 2" strap hinge (i cut the hinge where the launch tube sits so it will fit in the car: see that when raised it is almost against the wall) and glueing that onto the car weight (1/8" from the end). Glue a servo to the car weight. Attach a wire from the servo to the tube. Place a missile launcher inside the car. Two 'BABES' are visible - the blue linear objects... they will be mounted to servos so they can rotate. The BABES cars each require 3 servos : 1 roof, 1 lift, 1 rotate.
Servos need to have their range measured and the servo arm placed so that it moves correctly. I use a Hitec HPP-21 to control the servos when doing this. See this for my notes - information. "___Servo limits.pdf" is included with the code. It is used to write down the Min Max values for each servo used by the program (that you have to manually enter, the pdf is not 'read' by the program).
Servos push a wire (1.1..1.25 maybe too long: 1.5") (bent paper clip) to raise - close the roof with a servo arm as long as possible that can fit in the car - Glue two arms together if necessary. A large servo arm is cut from a 4 way arm and glued in place to hold the roof servo wire. The roof servo is slightly raised (styrene the size of the pad is glued onto the floor - it does not extend out as the missile plate goes at one side and the wires go past on the other} so the launcher platform- the steel plate originally used as a weight in the car- can slip underneath it and servo wires can slide by the servo. One end (both?) of the car has a screw -too long- through the floor. Use that end for the roof servo as you have to raise it a little anyway. The other end needs to be flat so the launcher can rotate up 90 degrees. If both ends screws protrude - change them out or cut them off - that is easier than drilling a hole in the bottom of the launcher hinge so it can sit flat when raised (Simply use the screws holding the plate to replace both those screws. Even if you decide to screw the plate back into the car, you can use the long screws as they go DOWN - not up into the car.) The old RTR cars have long screws everywhere and the plate is melted and glued rather than screwed down (the plate can be drilled out and screws replaced but geez just dont get them or use them for command cars - not launchers. Oh yeah and they have plastic wheels and lousy plastic couplers. The Gold line cars vary with the types of screws, the new Platinum line is similar to the Gold except it has the outside grab wires already attached (4 door, 8 door not released as of October 2013).
The servos in the car raise the roof and launch tube. The roof servos are mounted so their swivel is furthest from the opening which gives them the greatest range, which also means 1 is right side and the other has the other servo side down. The servo wires exit through a hole drilled-cut in the bottom corner of the car. A better idea would be to cut a hole in the wall-ends so the wires can go from one car to the other without drooping down onto the track... Unfortunately it requires a large hole to enable the servo wire ends to be passed though. ... Better than having the wires drag and catch on the track switches... So now I drill-cut out the wall area.
The missile launcher with servo. Exact placement of the servo does not seem to be critical, as long as the wire connects (6.6666... inches from the end of the plate to the forward edge of the servo) :) although the farther it is from the launcher base makes for more room for the tube to be lowered. 7" from end of the weight works for me. The wire hole in the launch tube is 5/8" from the base (This creates a circular path for the servo to push against to raise the missile). Longer (1") servo arms work better (I cut off 1 arm of the long arm that comes with HS-55 servos and use the other half glued to another arm for the roof). Notice that the hinge is cut around the launch tube for a close fit. Make a 7.75" long wire with Z-bends on the ends (7.75" Plus the z-bends). Put one Z-bend in the missile and the other in the servo. [Better? use clevis and 2-56 threadded wire on the missile end and z-bend the one going into the servo horn] Use the wire to locate the position of the servo. The servo arm should be lower than the missile when completely down so it and the wire does not interfere with the missile lowering... you need every millimeter to fit all this stuff in the car. See the missile image in the materials picture. With the servo arm and missile down -mark around the servo. Raise the arm and missile - out of the way and use servo tape to mount the servo in its correct location.
Retest the servos to verify their range values have not changed. The roof servo is mounted in the car and connected to the roof. The missile tube servo is mounted and connected. Modification of the car is complete. Try not to raise the missile with the roof closed :) See this for my notes on building the electronic components and the software. Following is images of launchers, BABES, and then other military units with links. Even when seen working on my Youtube channel things may change visibly, however the structural elements should remain the same.

Alpha Dogs of War : Latest .. Version 1
[Alpha Battery: Image of the simulated -sliding- Hydraulic launch tube elevation device. The purple-gray part slides up and down... actually opposite of what something that is raising the launch tube would be doing - it seems. The paint needs to be glossy so the slider slides easily.] {As of Jan 2013 these will be changed to Tube in a tube aka C Battery version as they slide TOO far UP when lowered and interfere with the servo}
Black Widow Makers : Latest .. Version 1 [Western Black Rhino extinct as of 11-11-11]
[Bravo Battery : simulated -sliding- Hydraulic launch tube elevation device, similar to A Battery] {As of Jan 2013 these will be changed to Tube in a tube aka C Battery version as they slide TOO far UP when lowered and interfere with the servo}
Charlies Angels of Death : Latest .. Version 1
[Charlie Battery : Image of the simulated -tube-in-a-tube- Hydraulic launch tube elevation device The purple thing is stationary (actually it is cardboard:)) and the tubes slide one into the other. This seemed slightly more realistic - for a simulation. The top outside tube is from McDonalds and buy a bendy straw for the bottom tube that slides inside. So... sliding movement or stationary actuality... {as of March 2013 Neither Hydraulic tube way worked - the servos can move the tubes - when the servos are done -after they are moved the tubes make the servo 'jitter' - they still have some resistance or pressure or ... they are cut and strapped-glued down now... not moving - just something against the missile launcher.]

21st Army, 3rd Armored Corps, 9th Armored Division, 5th Chaos Brigade, First (Heavy Metal Missile) of the 7th Artillery Regiment (GGGirls), and the Battery icon
Dunno if this looks too cluttered or not...it is only visible when the roof is raised. The launchers and boxcars need some type of identification to keep them paired and track the servo settings. The Insignia are paper glued on with white glue so they can be removed easily. What is Really needed is the same image on the tube to be on the car. Those above are everything Except that missiles icon which is not visible as it is one the other side of the missile.
BABES (Bionic Artillery Beamed Energy System) They might not look like much, until you see their rotating swath of Deadly Phased Disruption...

All BABES are different.. the reason is classified, tho i hear it is something about operating on different frequencies... that or its what you get when the contract goes to the lowest bidder. Sewing thread spools, plastic easter eggs, fertilizer measuring spoons, and plastic scrap. Three Battalions of 6 totals to 18 BABES.
You might notice that the BABES changed from version 1 to version 2 in the 1/7 BN Battery pictures. They have been changed again in the BABES battery pictures. They might even change again before they actually get mounted in the cars...
6 of the 18 BABES are with the 1/7 BN (9th Armored Division) missile launchers. That leaves 12 : 2 Battalions of BABES to assign to travel with other 2 Divisions in III Corps.
and then I made 3 more BNs for 18 more BABES for XII Corps. These are in the assembly stage to display what they are made of :)

and so I made 3 more BNs for 18 more BABES for the XXI Corps (Sharp Shooters), 21st Army ... tho as they are Air Assault, Air Armor, and Airborne Divisions their use of Railway transportation would be slim to none... The BABES are defensive weapons and would be used to defend the rail shipments of their units.

18x3 = 54 BABES.. sheesh. The ones with tube bases allow gluing pictures on them, tho the others look wackier. Some (the ones with a tower of cones) are narrow enough to allow continuous rotation without needing to center them to go back inside the cars .. the others would only rotate back and forth somewhat less than 180 degrees total. Might need to make some kind of interchangeable mount so they can be all be mounted in the available cars as 54 is a lot of cars for this goofiness ... uhm, a whole train of BABES...
Reality bites. All the BABES that were not made symmetric upon the vertical axis, that is if anything hangs over past the wall of the car it will not enter the cavern. They were all kinda designed so they could enter, the symmetry error creeped in during actual construction. As of Feb 2013 this leaves 18 that can fit in if they enter the car 'sideways' and 2 that can be used as continuous rotation BABES. The 18 seem to be in 3 groups... not yet named. The 6 on the left are from the 4/10th, the rest are partials. Even scrounging 18 servo horns might leave some unmounted. eh eh yeah tho there will be a few more built for the continuous rotation now that the design requirements are clear. Double erk. The large areas on the BABES is where the servo should be... o well and so it goes... it seemed like a neat idea untill things did not fit.
The continuous rotation BABES are great. The other ones only rotate < 90 degrees total left to right so it is hard to tell they even rotate. Seems the BABES will be continuous rotation or not at all... All that happy time building was wasted. eh eh yeah happy time building continuous rotation BABES is about to commence. Made a total of 6 : 2 ber Battery to support the First (Heavy Metal Missile) of the 7th Artillery Battalion (GGGirls).
mmlBABES build instructions 2016-04-13
Cut 9/16" off the end of a 2" strap hinge. Save that little bit for posterity.
Cut off the servo mounting plastic on the sloped side of the SpringRC SM-S3317R.
Mount the SpringRC SM-S3317R full rotation servo with servo tape onto that cut off side of the hinge:
Hold the full side of the hinge vertical and lower the servo down along with the servo mounts touching
and the wire wrapped around the side-out of the way until the servo tape is pressed onto the hinge.
Sheesh, IGNORE all this about wire and get 2-56 1 end threaded wire and use a clevis pin on that end and z-bend the servo end. This will allow adjustments and a secure connection.
Cut a 0.062" 1.57mm K&S #504 wire 8 1/4" long. [0.078" 2mm wire (K&S #505) ends up not being able to z-bend without breaking at the bends]
Put a z-bend on one end and a 3/8 inch long bend on the other end. [z-bend using a hammer pounding the z-bender on an anvil]
Drill a 3/32 hole in the farthest hole of a (big honkin 1.5" long) servo horn that has had one end cut off
- the cut off end is to be used later for the roof servo. *
-either put the wire in the servo horn hole now or later - either way makes for trouble...
Glue that servo horn to the servo so the top is pointing up at the back side of the servo horn hole
- about a half inch from the hinge. (While the glue dries overnight would be a good time to skip down and do the roof servo thing.)
Mount that servo hinge contraption with servo tape 7/16" from the end of a weight from one of the cars.
Put the wire in the servo horn hole now if you did not do it before.
A 0.078" z-bend wire going through a 3/32" hole is as tight a fit with sloopy results as can be done AFAIK. And so a 0.062" wire really is sloppy- but it actually works rather than breaking while adjusting it. Might try 0.062 and smaller holes next time ...
Put the bent end of the wire into a HS-55 super duper long servo horn that has had one end cut off.
The cut off can be glued to other servo horns from ercs800 or TowerPro SG-50
... HS-55 are stronger and come with the horns so they are what I try to get.
Since the HS-55 has already been tested and preset to its servo horn up position - right?
Put servo tape on the HS-55 and place it where it goes with the bottom against the edge of the weight.
At this time the wire should be along the edge of the weight with the HS-55 mounted and the full rotation sevo mounted.
Glue one of the x wing servo horns from a SM-S3317R to the bottom of a BABES device.
Bend and position then glue the wire from the SM-S3317R to its corner so it does not interfere with the servo being raised and lowered.
(While this glue dries overnight skip back down and finish the roof servo) When dry, stick the BABES device onto the SM-S3317R.
Congratulations, this is now a complete BABES device ready to be placed inside of a car that has its roof servo mounted.
The SM-S3317R end goes at the end of the car that the roof servo is not
.. slide the end of the weight under the roof servo and lower the SM-S3317R end into the car.
The SM-S3317R end should fit against the raised block of the car and be on the floor of the car.
*Mounting the roof servo
Roof servos require a little bitty servo and a long horn.
TowerPro SG-50 servos or smaller are what is required to fit into the car. Two horns are glued together to make one long enough.
Make a styrene platform for the servo - so the wires can be run under-alongside it and out the car
and the inside car side has enough space for the weight to go underneath it and be against that raised block of the car.
Glue the cut off end of that big servo horn laying down along the inside roof 3/16" from the end
and centered against the 3 raised roof rails -that have been cut away so the horn is against their now vertical edge.
(While this glue dries overnight skip back up and do stuff till you get to near the end where you glue a horn onto the BABES device.)
Cut a wire 2" long and make a big semi-circle bend in both ends and have it still be 1.5" long. [or 1 1/8" long maybe works a lot better]
Put the wire through the roof servo horn and the roof servo
and then position the servo that has servo tape on it down into the car onto the platform.

Search for LGM-30 Minuteman, Peacekeeper Rail Garrison Car, RT-23 Molodets, Railroad gun, or armored train to get real world information. Russian SS-24 Scalpel videos Russian "Topol-M " ... and an interesting idea for shorter range missiles hidden inside containers..
For summertime outdoor fun: If there was a G scale SD70ACE or GEVO (USA Trains SD70MAC 1/29 : Length: 30 1/2" Height: 6" ) with 86' boxcars 1/24: 43" 1/29: 35.5" (60' 1/29 : Length: 25 1/2" Height: 6 3/8" ) ... or maybe make a RC Mobile Launcher for the
ESTES Patriot missiles (Length: 21.3 in. Diameter: 1.64 in. ... it has to be able to rotate up so length is ~25")... they just go up in the air and explode - hitting NOTHING.
